THEO FLEURY
Giant talent, giant temper
The most successful and certainly the most notorious
professional player ever to come to this country joined Belfast Giants for
the 2005-06 season.
Theo Fleury , 37, won an Olympic gold medal with Canada and a Stanley
Cup with Calgary Flames, but he was also tossed out of the NHL for failing
to stick with their drug rehabilitation scheme.
A genuine character then, though maybe not the best ambassador for the Elite
League as it strived to be taken seriously.
All Fleury's talents were on display in Belfast, for better or for worse.
\he led the league in scoring and was voted player of the year by the
British Ice Hockey Writers Association and their most valuable player by the
Giants. He was also the league's dirtiest player with 270 penalty minutes.
He was equally gifted in making controversial remarks - you can find a
selection of his riper comments in the annual's Quotes of the Year
section.

LATE NEWS - ELITE FIND A SPONSOR
On the Friday before August Bank Holiday 2006,
the Elite League announced that no-frills airline,
bmibaby , had agreed to be their title sponsor for
the next seven years.
No financial details were disclosed but the
Annual's sources said the deal was worth
around £50,000 a year in cash plus free flights.
The airline has airports near most of the
League's clubs.
