"I know the fans like fighting but it doesn't happen in football.  Britain's leagues should adopt international rules and eliminate fighting completely."

The Billion Dollar League

NHL salaries burst through the one billion dollar ceiling in 2000-01.

The total payroll on opening night for the 737 players and the 47 players on the injured reserve list was US$1,001,999,328 [about £714 million].

Sixteen NHL players earned $7 million or more, led by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ Paul Kariya and Colorado Avalanche’s Peter Forsberg, who commanded a record $10 million each. There were 32 players earning $5 million or more, and 46 being paid $4 million, including Belfast-born Owen Nolan of San Jose Sharks.

League salaries more than doubled since the last collective barganing agreement was signed in 1995 by the league and the Players’ Association.

The average for an NHL player is now $825,000, an all-time high in a league where the only talented player taking home a ‘moderate’ amount - $1.4 million - is Pittsburgh Penguin’s Mario Lemieux who owns his own club.

What was the total attendance figure for Sheffield Steelers 24 Superleague home games?
127,939
138,009
142,082

"Canadians dominate the sport over here, but they've given Superleague a very British feel."
